Look Right Before Turning Right

The Sioux Falls Bicycle Committee has worked on a safety video for sidewalk bicycle riding due to of the large number of crashes that occur between bicyclists on the sidewalk and drivers turning right.

Members of the committee analyzed police reports for 2015 & 2016 and determined that 42% of all reported crashes with a bicycle rider were when a driver was turning right and the bicyclists was riding on the sidewalk against the flow of traffic.

Bicyclists fare best when they are visible and predictable. When riding on the sidewalk against the flow of traffic, a bicyclists is neither visible or predictable for drivers.

FAB encourages operating your bicycle as you would a car by riding on the street, in the lane, and obeying traffic laws. If you do ride on the sidewalk, remember to stop at all intersections and yield to drivers. Bicyclists on sidewalks do not have the right of way.

Thanks to the City of Sioux Falls for producing this safety PSA. You may recognize a few fellow riders in the video!
