Once upon a time, Monday, Nov 5, there were some cyclists standing in the rain handing out lights on 8th St. FAB President Michael had heard about a time where a Minneapolis group put all these blinky lights on a trail bridge. Any cyclists that needed one could ride by and pick one up. So Michael brought the idea to the FAB Community Involvement group. What about this blinky light idea? Do you think we could do it? FAB’s Fighting Darkness Event was born.
With the help of a generous local business, Nyberg’s Ace Hardware, the dream came true as 150 blinky red/white lights were donated.
Unfortunately, as the story goes, the weather was cold and wet on the first commuting day after Daylight Saving Time ended. Not to be deterred, several volunteers fanned out to visit the bus stop, the library, and downtown Sioux Falls to hand out lights to commuters. Some were handed out at the Mission and Bishop Dudley House. A couple more were put on bikes at the St Francis House.
All in all, the story ends well as there has already been sightings of Ace blinky lights on a bicycles located around the center of town.
So the moral of the story is we can do good for the community but it takes your ideas and your efforts to make it come true. Get involved with this awesome group called Falls Area Bicyclists. Together we can do great things, even if it is one blinky light at a time.
